Buying a used Audi Q5 8R in South Africa

Buying a first-generation Audi Q5 in South Africa? Check the exact engine and gearbox, and ask for evidence behind reported oil use or coolant loss.
Before buying a first-generation Q5, establish exactly which engine and gearbox you are considering. Then investigate any reported symptoms with records and appropriate testing. A seller's explanation may be useful, but it is not a diagnosis.
This guide covers the Q5 8R, excluding the SQ5 and its successor. The oil and coolant sections explain what to ask about on a 2.0 TFSI petrol car. They are not a fault list for diesels or V6s, or a reliability verdict on the whole range.
An automatic Q5 is not necessarily S tronic
Audi South Africa dates the first local Q5 to 2009 and announced its replacement in July 2017. That does not create an exact registration-year cutoff: establish the generation from the vehicle's identity. Audi's local replacement announcement provides the timeline.
The January 2013 local facelift illustrates why the gearbox matters. The 132 kW 2.0 TFSI was manual, while the 165 kW version used eight-speed Tiptronic. The 3.0 TFSI replaced the 3.2 and was also listed with Tiptronic. Diesel choices differed: the 130 kW 2.0 TDI offered manual or S tronic, and the 180 kW 3.0 TDI used seven-speed S tronic. These are launch specifications, not an exhaustive all-years map. Contemporary local launch coverage records those distinctions.
Ask the workshop to confirm the actual engine and transmission identification before interpreting maintenance invoices. Do not choose a service schedule simply because an advertisement says “automatic”.
If oil use is mentioned, ask for measurements
An Audi of America oil-consumption bulletin contains a specific 2011 Q5 software entry for the CAEB engine and restricts its electronic measurement procedure to CAEB. That is US documentation, not proof that the procedure applies to a South African Q5. Have an Audi-experienced workshop identify the engine first. Audi's oil-consumption bulletin describes a service and measurement process.
If the seller reports topping up, ask how much oil was added over what distance, and request any completed consumption test or repair records. A brief test drive cannot establish a long-term consumption rate. Where the answer remains vague, ask the workshop what evidence is needed before deciding whether to proceed. This bulletin does not establish that every early petrol Q5 has excessive consumption, or that a later car is automatically clear of it.
Reported coolant loss needs a located cause
A separate US Audi bulletin concerns 2.0 TFSI pump and thermostat-housing leakage and lists Q5 model years 2011–2017. It requires pressure testing to establish the leak. The installed-component match to a particular South African car still needs confirmation; do not transfer this evidence to diesel or V6 engines. Audi's coolant-leak bulletin sets out that technical context.
If coolant loss has been reported, ask a qualified workshop to locate the actual source. For a claimed repair, request an itemised invoice identifying what leaked, what was replaced and how the result was checked. Neither the bulletin nor an unexplained low level justifies assuming the whole assembly needs replacement. Unresolved loss deserves investigation before purchase, not a reassuring label such as “just a top-up”.
Give the inspector a question to answer
Send the advertisement, vehicle identity, invoices and seller's explanations ahead of the appointment. Ask the report to separate what was observed, what was tested and what remains uncertain. A replaced part is a useful record, not a guarantee of future reliability.
Use our used-car buying checklist for the wider viewing and the test-drive checklist for a safe ordinary drive. You can find an E-Moto expert, but first confirm experience with this Q5 version, suitable diagnostic equipment and a written report. Establish whether any specialist testing needs a separate workshop appointment.
Know which questions remain unanswered. If a consequential symptom still has no supported explanation, pause the purchase rather than treating a smooth drive as clearance.
