Used petrol Haval Jolion: version and safety checks before buying

By E-Moto Team · Published · Updated · 3 min read

Buying an original petrol Haval Jolion in South Africa? Confirm its gearbox and fitted safety equipment, then investigate its history before committing.

When comparing used Jolions, start with the exact car behind the advert. A familiar model name and a long equipment list are not enough: establish the version, ask what has been repaired and check that the features important to you are actually fitted and working.

This guide focuses on the original South African petrol Jolion. It does not assess the hybrid or Jolion Pro, or claim that every example develops the same faults.

Identify the engine and gearbox

At its 2021 South African launch, the Jolion used a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 105 kW and 210 Nm, driving the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, usually advertised as DCT. Those are launch specifications, not confirmation of an individual car. Contemporary local launch report

The Jolion S is a separate consideration: Haval's brochure specifies 130 kW, 270 Nm and a seven-speed DCT. The same brochure shows that curtain airbags and driver-assistance equipment vary by grade. Do not assume that every petrol Jolion has the features pictured in an advert or brochure. Haval Jolion brochure

Request the VIN and ask the seller or dealer to confirm the original specification. Make a short list of your must-have features, then have their presence checked on the car rather than relying on a trim badge alone.

Understand the South African safety result

Global NCAP's 2026 South African Jolion assessment awarded two stars for adult occupant protection and three for child occupant protection. The tested vehicle's bodyshell and footwell were rated stable. A side-pole test was not performed because side-head protection was not standard; that is not the same as failing a pole test. Read this result alongside the specification of the vehicle you are considering. It does not establish a separate score for every older trim, the hybrid or Pro, and extra equipment alone is not proof of a higher rating. An inspection assesses the used car's condition; it cannot change its crash-test rating.

Ask for evidence, not reassurance

Before travelling to view the car, request service records and invoices for significant repairs. Compare dates and recorded kilometres. If the seller mentions a recurring warning or a repair that “just needs finishing”, ask what was diagnosed, what work was completed and whether the symptom returned.

These are general buying checks, not a list of established Jolion defects. Our used-car buying checklist helps organise the wider paperwork and viewing process.

Agree on a safe, permitted test drive that includes ordinary traffic and parking manoeuvres. Try the controls you will use daily, and record anything you cannot demonstrate or explain. Do not deliberately trigger emergency braking or lane-assistance intervention to test it. Use our test-drive checklist to plan the viewing.

Decide what must be resolved before paying

Have unexplained warnings, drivability concerns or gaps in repair evidence assessed before committing. A discount is not a diagnosis, and a receipt for previous work is not a guarantee of future reliability.

You can find an agent through E-Moto. Confirm experience with the particular Jolion version, available diagnostic equipment and what the written findings will cover. Ask the report to distinguish checked items from anything requiring further workshop investigation.
