How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost and what's included?

By E-Moto Team · Updated 12 June 2026 · 2 min read

Typical South African inspection pricing and what a thorough pre-purchase check should cover before you buy a used car.

A proper inspection costs less than one major repair. Here is what South African buyers can expect to pay and what should be included.

Typical price ranges

  • Basic checklist (no diagnostics): R700–R1,200; quick visual and road test.
  • Full inspection with diagnostics: R1,200–R2,500; includes scan, photos, and report.
  • Specialist/exotic checks: R2,500+ with brand-specific tools.

Pricing varies by location, vehicle type, and how fast you need the report.

What a good inspection should cover

  • Paperwork: NATIS/VIN match, license disc validity, and finance/settlement questions.
  • Exterior: paint depth where possible, panel alignment, rust, lights, glass, tyres.
  • Mechanical: fluids, leaks, belts, suspension joints, brakes, steering play.
  • Electronics: dash warnings, infotainment, windows/mirrors, aircon performance.
  • Diagnostics: scan for fault codes, airbag events, mileage inconsistencies.
  • Test drive: cold start behaviour, gearbox shifts, braking stability, vibrations, overheating.
  • Photos/report: clear images of defects, underbody, and consumables with recommendations.

Turn-around time

  • Same day: often available in metro areas (Joburg, Cape Town, Durban) at a premium.
  • 24–48 hours: common for standard bookings.

Value beyond price

  • Negotiation leverage: defects become bargaining chips.
  • Safety assurance: hidden crash or mechanical risks are surfaced.
  • Budget planning: lets you set aside funds for immediate fixes and licensing.

When to spend more

  • High-value cars, performance models, or anything with air suspension/complex electronics.
  • Vehicles with patchy history or sellers who resist scans—pay for the deeper check.
