A seller's document checklist and transfer steps to avoid delays or penalties when selling a car in South Africa.

Having the right paperwork makes your sale smoother and keeps you clear of penalties. Use this South African seller checklist.

Seller documents to prepare

  • NATIS/registration certificate in your name.
  • Your ID copy and proof of address (not older than 3 months).
  • Roadworthy certificate (RWC): required if the buyer will transfer soon; it strengthens trust.
  • License disc: valid and matching VIN/engine numbers.
  • Settlement letter if financed: shows exact payout figure for the bank.
  • Service history and invoices: boosts value and transparency.

Forms to complete

  • Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO): submit to the licensing department within 21 days to avoid liability.
  • Sales agreement: include buyer/seller details, VIN, price, condition, and “sold as-is” if applicable.
  • If financed: release letter from the bank after settlement so the title can move.

Transfer process overview

  1. Buyer pays agreed amount; settle finance if applicable.
  2. Submit NCO; give the buyer a copy.
  3. Hand over NATIS, RWC, ID copy, proof of address, and sales agreement.
  4. Buyer registers vehicle with RLV form and pays fees; you retain proof of NCO.

Risk controls

  • Verify buyer ID and funds; use cleared bank payments or bank branch meetups.
  • Keep copies of all documents and proof of payment.
  • Do not let the car leave until funds are cleared and paperwork is signed.
