A buyer's paperwork checklist for transferring a used car legally in South Africa.

Which documents do I need to buy a used car?

Paperwork can trip up a great deal. Use this South African checklist to collect the right documents and keep your transfer smooth.

Core documents to request

  • NATIS/registration certificate: verify seller details and VIN/engine numbers.
  • Seller ID copy and proof of address: matches the person you are dealing with.
  • Settlement letter: needed if the vehicle is financed to confirm outstanding amount.
  • Roadworthy certificate (RWC): required for transfer if current disc is not valid; ensure it is recent (within 60 days is safest).
  • License disc: check validity and that VIN matches.
  • Service history and invoices: proof of maintenance and mileage consistency.

Buyer documents to prepare

  • Your ID copy and proof of address (not older than 3 months).
  • Completed Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle (RLV form) from the licensing department.
  • Insurance confirmation: activate cover for the day you collect the car.

Transfer steps at the licensing department

  1. Seller completes Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO form) and gives you a copy.
  2. You submit the RLV form with NATIS, roadworthy, ID, and proof of address.
  3. Pay transfer and license fees; request new license disc.
  4. Keep copies of all forms and receipts for your records.

Who keeps what

  • Seller keeps copies of NCO submission and proof of transfer.
  • Buyer keeps originals of NATIS (after reissue), RWC, and all receipts.

Red flags to watch for

  • Name on NATIS does not match the seller (except verified dealers/consignment with supporting documents).
  • Missing or blurred engine/VIN numbers on the vehicle.
  • Seller refuses to provide a settlement letter when finance is mentioned.
